Three police officers were tragically killed and five others wounded during a shootout while executing an arrest warrant for a felon wanted for possession of a firearm in Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings, the officers were met with gunfire when they arrived at a residence in the city’s suburbs to apprehend the suspect. The officers exchanged fire with the man in the yard before he fell, but then shots were fired at them from inside the home.
Following the shootout, authorities found a suspect dead in the front yard of the home. After a three-hour standoff, two more people were discovered inside the residence and are currently being questioned in connection with the incident.
Chief Jennings confirmed that two individuals were involved in the attack, but did not provide further details about their identities or motives.
The community is mourning the loss of the three officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and the wounded officers are receiving medical treatment for their injuries. The investigation into the incident is ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly shootout.
