“Around 1 a.m., our emergency services were called to a fire in a mansion that has been converted into several homes, on Demolderstraat in Schaarbeek,” said Derieuw. The fire is said to have spread entirely to the rear part of the duplex, on the ground floor.

The fire brigade found the resident. He received first aid from the on-site medical services and was taken to hospital. “The victim, a man in his sixties, is seriously injured. She suffered burns and was overcome by the smoke,” Derieuw added.

The fire could be extinguished so that the fire did not spread to the other apartments in the building. It is not yet clear how the fire started.
