According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap News, the satellite can use radar waves to take very sharp images of objects on the ground, even when it is cloudy and regardless of the weather. South Korea has always relied on the United States for intelligence obtained through spy satellites, but wants to supplement this by expanding its own reconnaissance capabilities.
To that end, South Korea wants to have five spy satellites in space by 2025. Last December, a SpaceX rocket launched the first home-built South Korean spy satellite into orbit.
