Meerbeke –
Kruis in Meerbeke, near Ninove, was temporarily closed by the police on Saturday afternoon. Special units overpowered a man who had threatened him with a knife in his home. The man was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, but when he left his home he was arrested.
At around 2 p.m., residents of Kruis street in Meerbeke were startled by approaching police and an ambulance. A man who lives in the street had recently barricaded himself in his home with a knife. The man in his thirties was spotted and the emergency services were immediately alerted.
Under the influence
The police set up a perimeter for safety reasons, the fire brigade was called to the scene and the grid operator Fluvius also had to turn off the gas pipe to the house as a precaution. The action took just over an hour, but then the suspicious person suddenly walked into the street and the special police units were able to overpower him. The man is said to have been under the influence of alcohol and drugs since Friday.(Read more below the photo)
The man was home alone at the time of the incident. During the action, local residents were asked to stay indoors, but many curious people still came to see what was going on. Ultimately, there was never any real danger to local residents.
