Nasser Jabour, director of the National Institute of Geophysics, denied the occurrence of any tsunami near the city of Agadir or the recording of any tsunami in the region, noting that the earthquake recorded in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean “had no impact on Morocco.”

Jabour said, in a statement to Hespress, “The earthquake that struck last night in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean had no impact and was not perceptible. Regarding the tsunami warning issued by some monitoring sites, it was canceled at the time.”

The director of the National Institute of Geophysics added that the rising waves that occur in the region are only related to “a climate phenomenon, and not a tsunami or earthquake.”

Jabour explained: “There will be atmospheric pressure that changes and produces strong waves. This makes the sea rough in the region.”

Social media activists circulated pictures indicating that a mini-tsunami had occurred in the region, which was denied by the National Institute of Geophysics.

On Thursday evening, the US Geological Survey announced that a 6.0-magnitude earthquake had occurred in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, confirming that it struck at a depth of 10.0 kilometers.
