The big newspapers read exhortations to create a mass liberal-socialist party, forgetting that the numerous attempts to achieve this goal have been very noble, from the Rosselli brothers to Ferruccio Parri, but they have all failed. Probably what is needed is not to impart lessons from the outside to a divided and bewildered management group as much as you want but not fasting in political culture and therefore does not need these presumptuous pearls of wisdom. Instead, it would be necessary to deal with the organized base, of which – unlike almost all other formations (with the exception of the League) – the Democratic Party continues to have.
If those who think they know what the Democratic Party should do and become had the will and the possibility to propose themselves to the militants, members and sympathizers of the Democratic Party through primary consultations, putting themselves on the line, the confrontation would take on a political, risky but effective character. , instead of staying in the didactic field, safe but irrelevant. Everyone should participate in this confrontation with the real body of the Democratic Party, too Matteo Renzi, also Pier Luigi Bersani, also Carlo Calenda. Perhaps this is an unrealistic aspiration, according to the paragraphs of the regulation of the primaries and the statute in force. But if the Democratic Party wants to overcome the syndrome of the vindictive former secretary who if he loses he goes to found another small party, the doors should be reopened to everyone as long as they accept the basic democratic principle, that is, who has the majority decides and who has the minority discusses and criticizes from within. Is that too much to ask?
