In a statement shared on social networks, the Presidency of the Republic confirmed that Jorge Glas was arrested on the night of April 5 and placed under the orders of justice.
“Having abused the immunities and privileges granted to the diplomatic mission that housed Jorge Glas, and granting diplomatic asylum contrary to the conventional legal framework, his capture has been proceeded with,” the document states.
The Presidency added that no criminal can be considered politically persecuted. And he recalled that Jorge Glas was convicted, with an executory sentence, and had an arrest warrant ordered against him by the National Court of Justice, within a case for the crime of embezzlement.
The Government indicated that the armed conflict facing Ecuador will not have repercussions on democracy and citizen peace if acts that interfere with the rule of law, national sovereignty or with issues of interference in the country’s internal affairs continue or are condoned.
