Florida Implements Laws to Eliminate “Woke” Policies in Education

In a move to eliminate what they consider “woke” policies in education, the University of Florida has decided to abolish its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) office, along with associated jobs and contracts related to the program. This decision is in response to new regulations set forth by the Florida Board of Governors, supported by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis.

The news was brought to light by journalist Christopher Rufo, who shared an email sent by the university’s rector and senior vice president of academic affairs announcing the changes.

“To comply with Florida Board of Governors Regulation 9.016 on prohibited expenditures, the University of Florida has closed the Office of the Chief Diversity Officer, eliminated administrative positions and appointments, and halted DEI-focused contracts with third-party vendors,” the email stated.

The university has pledged to reallocate the approximately $5 million previously allocated for DEI expenses, including salaries and expenses, to a teacher hiring fund. Those affected by the job cuts will receive 12 weeks of pay and are encouraged to apply for other vacancies by April 19.

Although the DEI program has been abolished, university officials emphasized their commitment to universal human dignity and promoting a community based on trust and respect for all members of the institution.

The legislation passed in 2023, supported by Governor DeSantis, aims to eliminate critical race theory and DEI programs in education, with a focus on equality and representation for all individuals.

While some argue that DEI programs are crucial for ensuring equality and representation, Governor DeSantis celebrated the decision, stating that “DEI is toxic and has no place in our public universities.”

With Florida leading the way in eliminating DEI programs in higher education, the debate over the role of such initiatives in promoting diversity and inclusion continues to evolve.
