Guillermo ‘Memo’ Ochoa this Saturday became the first Mexican goalkeeper to receive 1,000 goals in his career at the club level, reports local sports newspaper Récord.
The unfortunate mark came with the defeat of his team, Salernitana, against Cagliari in Serie A of Italian football, a match in which he received four goals, two of them on behalf of the Uzbek Eldor Shomurodov.
The match became the 300th of Ochoa’s career in European football, another historic milestone for an Aztec goalkeeper in the same night that, however, was overshadowed by a thousand goals. Ochoa, 38, has played for six teams in five countries.
Misleading figure?
On social networks they were quick to talk about the numbers of the man who is also captain of the Aztec team. David Faitelson, Mexican sports journalist, believes that the number of scores received attributed to his compatriot should not be a reason to question his long and successful career.
«The figures are deceiving… Guillermo Ochoa’s 1,000 goals conceded are nothing compared to his daring and quality to play 300 games in Europe. “Guillermo Ochoa is one of the best Mexican goalkeepers in history,” he wrote on the social network.
Faitelson’s opinion provoked mixed reactions. While some consider that Memo is a “terrible goalkeeper” and makes serious mistakes, others assure that “his bravery and skill have led him to play 300 games in Europe” and his “legacy transcends statistics.” On the Internet they highlight that, although 1,000 goals against is not small, Ochoa has achieved important saves with his teams that could have represented worse results.
