Currently, there are eight housing lotteries in New York City, offering a total of more than 880 free apartments. The NYC Housing Connect app is the primary source for information on available homes, with rental prices starting as low as $498.00 USD. Additionally, there are options available for citizens with little financial solvency, ensuring that housing is accessible to a wide range of individuals.
The districts with the most available apartments include Manhattan and the Bronx. In Manhattan, the Manhattan Green Path project offers nearly 267 usable apartments for residents earning between $19,646.00 USD and $192,610.00 USD per year. This project includes amenities such as terraces, gyms, common rooms, and bicycle parking. In the Bronx, the Betances VI alternative consists of 64 apartments for the low-income population who receive help under the Housing Law.
In 2018, almost 5 million New Yorkers expressed interest in the housing lotteries, with statistics indicating that only one out of 592 candidates were successful in securing an apartment. The selection process involves a computer that distributes random numbers, and applicants who win the lottery will be notified.
