CAGLIARI. Organ transplant activity is growing in Sardinia. This was recorded in the latest report by the National Transplant Center of the Higher Institute of Health. In 2021, a total of 75 interventions were performed on the island with an increase of 27% compared to 2020. More in detail, in 2021 there were 31 kidney transplants, 37 liver, 5 heart and two combined kidney-liver and kidney transplants -pancreas. In 2020 there were 59 transplants: 26 kidney transplants, 26 liver, 5 heart and a double kidney transplant plus a combined kidney-liver transplant.
In 2021 the waiting lists for liver transplantation were canceled in Sardinia. The number of donors used is also increasing, i.e. the number of donors who were later found to be suitable for organ harvesting and who finally resulted in at least one transplant: the figure goes from 26.2 donors per million population (PMP) registered in 2020 to 34.7 in 2021, +8.5 which marks the fifth best increase at national level where the strongest regions record a decreasing trend. The organs taken in surplus, transplanted to other regions, were a total of 29: 14 kidney, 13 liver and 2 heart samples that the island has introduced into the national transplant network.
