Traversella. At the forefront the Alpine Club of Ivrea with the support of the Municipality. Priority to the climbing lines compromised by the 2017 fire

TRAVERSELLA

The climbing wall in Traversella, which will turn 70 next year, needs treatment. And the Ivrea section of the Italian Alpine Club launches an appeal to sport climbing enthusiasts as well as to simple friends of the mountain so that, with their financial contribution, they support the extraordinary maintenance project of the cliff, which in some of its itineraries shows the signs of time and the fruits of the action of a great fire.

The initiative, in which the Cai of Ivrea is supported by the Municipality of Traversella, provides for an extraordinary maintenance intervention in the most deteriorated points. The decisive blow to the cliff to the environment that surrounds it was given to him by the vast fire of autumn 2017. In fact, trees, shrubs and brambles burned by the fires had fallen on the climbing lines, while the surrounding woods had been almost completely destroyed. Serious damage had also reported some structures of the nearby Piazza Refuge. The areas affected by the planned interventions are the “Sector of hopes”, reserved for children, and other historical sectors such as: “Black plates”, “Spigolo Biletta”, “First jump”, “Concordia” and “Torrione degli instructors”. Renzo Ruggia, president of Cai Ivrea explains: «It will begin with a cleaning of the access and connection paths between the various sectors of the cliff and of the climbing lines, eliminating, where possible, brambles, moss and invasive vegetation. And we will also replace or add further anchors in the wall. All this by professionals in the sector, with the support of volunteer instructors belonging to the Canavese schools of mountaineering of the Cai. We really hope that many will join our efforts, concretely supporting the project, which aims to revive the Traversella cliff and the Valchiusellese mountaineering environment ».

Discovered in 1952 by Fernando Vallesa of Brosso and Amerigo Sonza from Lessolese, the Traversella rock gym has always been frequented not only by Canavese mountaineers but also by mountaineering schools from all over northern Italy. On the Valchiusellese crag, known above all for its routes with classic difficulties, from first to sixth grade, to which some extreme routes must however be added, detailed reports by mountaineers of the caliber of Alessandro Gogna and the late Gian Piero Motti had presented. In past years the crag had also been visited and “laically blessed” by the legendary climber Riccardo Cassin, who died at the age of 100. For the fundraising buonacausa.org/cause/falesiatraversella.
