Passenger organization TreinTramBus is declaring fault with De Lijn and Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works Lydia Peeters (Open VLD) due to the “prolonged poor service” on the Mechelen city network and a number of regional lines in the region. On some days less than half of the planned journeys are made, it sounds.
TreinTramBus has been calling De Lijn’s offering in the Mechelen region “minimal” since a round of savings in 2012, with usually only a bus every half hour or every hour, but recently things have really gotten out of hand, according to the traveler interest group.
“On December 23, 2023, De Lijn announced that it will be structurally canceling journeys in three regions with effect from January 8, 2024 due to staff shortages,” it said. “On weekdays, more than 120 trips per day are officially canceled. That official list was already a bitter pill to swallow, but in practice many more journeys are lost and not just on weekdays. Sometimes a line is not served for hours.”
Old buses
Travelers are left to their own devices and are dropping out en masse, according to TreinTramBus, which points to both the shortage of technicians and the old age of many buses. “The Flemish government is responsible for the chronic underinvestment in De Lijn’s vehicle fleet, but it is also De Lijn that chooses to consistently use the oldest buses in Mechelen,” explains TreinTramBus in the notice of default.
TreinTramBus demands an action plan to reduce trip cancellations to a maximum of 2 percent by this summer and to ensure full service by the end of the year. Currently canceled journeys must be reinstated, it is said, and the fleet must be rejuvenated. Affected travelers should also receive compensation.
