Two Kentucky tourists claim they were drugged and raped while vacationing in the Bahamas last Sunday. Amber Shearer and Dongayla Dobson told CNN affiliate WLEX that they were excited to enjoy their last day in the Bahamas but instead, it turned out to be their worst day.
The women alleged that they visited a beach club on the island of Grand Bahama, where they say they were drugged and raped by two club employees. They also claimed that they were not informed of a recent travel warning from the US State Department about violence in the Bahamas until four hours after the incident occurred.
Attorney Nicholas Gerson, who represents Shearer and Dobson, confirmed that toxicology reports showed both women had drugs in their systems. “There is no doubt that my clients were drugged, there is no doubt that my clients were raped, there is no doubt that there was a travel warning and they were never informed about it,” he said.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) said in a statement that preliminary reports suggested the incident occurred on a beach in central Grand Bahama. They have arrested two adult males, ages 54 and 40, in connection with the incident and are collaborating closely with the FBI in the ongoing investigation.
Back home in Kentucky, the women urged others to be cautious and warned, “Two is not a group. Do not buy any beverage unless it comes in a sealed container, in a bottle that you open yourself.”
The FBI confirmed that the RBPF is leading the investigation into the alleged incident. The women hope that by speaking out, they can prevent a similar incident from happening to others.
