Photographer Daria Addabbo has embarked on a journey on the road in the western United States, to demonstrate how the chronic lack of water in these territories is not only an environmental problem but also establishes a social breaking line, where the wealthiest classes survive while others adapt to living in the desert and give up to any ideal of equality.

His photos, taken between 2015 and 2019, have become a book, Waters of America (Jaca Book) in which the images are accompanied by texts by Alessandro Portelli, professor of Anglo-American literature and expert in popular culture. In the introduction to the volume, the journalist Ferdinando Cotugno focuses on the most interesting part of Addabbo’s project: he does not simply show the effects of the climate crisis between California, Arizona, Nevada, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas, but adds a level emotional, the experience of this crisis in people’s lives. “Addabbo was able to photograph the thirst of Americans and their soil”, writes Cotugno.

Waters of America it will be presented on January 12 at Palazzo Merulana, in Rome, together with the authors and Alessio Marchionna, journalist of Internazionale.
