A great controversy has been generated around the accusations, made through social networks, by the singer Jean Carlos Centeno, about his disagreement with the Society of Authors and Composers of Colombia, Sayco, over its liquidations of copyright property rights. the use of the 84 works documented in the entity.
“Arithmetic errors have consequences and even more so when, instead of correcting as you go, what you do is blackmail yourself even knowing that the surplus belongs to this author in its entirety,” wrote the Vallenato music artist on his official account. of Instagram, referring to his dissatisfaction with the entities in charge of managing copyrights, accusing them of making mistakes in the settlement of his royalties and of blackmailing in the process.
“I begin my defense in favor of my copyright, without the need to fight. I won’t take the millions that have me out there to heaven, but I won’t leave them to you either. I also have children, a family under a roof and families to look after (…) In life I will fight, in everything and with everything possible to enforce my copyrights. “They are my songs, they are my works and my musical works also belong to my family.”
SAYCO RESPONDS
With respect to the claim of maestro Jean Carlos Centeno, the Society of Authors and Composers of Colombia, Sayco, clarified that to date they have not received a formal request from him related to possible disagreements regarding his liquidations of economic copyrights for the use of the 84 works.
“We consider that doing it through networks is a surprise that, in addition to being unprecedented, is still unfair to this society that has always accompanied the teacher every time he has required it,” said Sayco through a press release. .
Sayco clarifies, for the sake of truth and the responsibility that assists it in fulfilling its obligations, that it punctually delivers to Maestro Centeno all the economic recognitions to which he is entitled as the author and/or composer of musical works, as well as those to which he is entitled. Statutorily, they are recognized for social welfare.
Out of respect for the teacher and due to the confidentiality of said information, Sayco refrains from revealing how much its settlements amount to, however, it is important to report that in the immediately preceding year alone (2023), millions were settled… figures that have been increasing year after year due to the use of the works that have been documented in this society.
“My administration has always been for you and all the partners, with open doors, I think you are aware, that being so, I inform you that we do not have millions saved for you or for your family or families, that have not been transferred to you for the use of its works to date, so in no way will it have to leave them to us, assured the president of Sayco, Rafael Manjarrez Mendoza, who, in addition, reiterated that: Sayco will always have its doors open to provide its partners with the information they require in “for the sake of your peace of mind in the proper management of your copyright.”
It is natural for human beings to fight for their rights, but it is for the prudent man to do so with real and concrete facts, therefore, Sayco invites the teacher to analyze the issues personally as appropriate between reliable parties.
Finally, the Society of Authors and Composers of Colombia calls for prudence and coherence on the part of all those people who spontaneously express their solidarity with the authors, so that before issuing unfounded judgments against the management of Sayco and/or or its directives, are documented so as not to give rise to misinformation.
