The National Institute of Health (INS) of Colombia confirmed this Tuesday that the ‘JN.1’ variant of covid-19 is circulating in the country, of which some cases have already been detected although there are no more hospitalizations or deaths due to the infection.
The agency said that in a new genomic study, the first cases of the new omicron variant, identified as JN.1, were detected since the week of December 24.
Below we tell you everything about this new strain of covid-19, taking into account the opinion via “X”, formerly Twitter, of Ronny Suárez, a leading journalist on the subject.
According to Ronny, JN.1 was detected for the first time in the United States in September 2023, where its high power of propagation was evident, so much so that the WHO (World Health Organization) “declared it to be of interest.” explains Suárez.

In the United States, it was the second largest wave of infections after Omicron. According to Ronny, this increase in infections led to a high rate of hospitalizations; However, he clarifies that taking into account the CDC, “there is no evidence that JN.1 presents a greater risk to public health in relation to other current variants.”
