This method of “photographing” reminds me of the “TV confession” that is common in mainland China. One of the most famous examples is the TV confession video of Internet V. Xue Manzi, which was broadcast by CCTV in September 2013. According to statistics from the international human rights organization “Guardians of the Protection” quoted by Deutsche Welle, as of February 2018, China had a total of 45 cases of confession videos broadcast on television, and more than half were “human rights cases.” The arrested persons in these cases were not convicted when they pleaded guilty on television.

It is precisely because the international community is familiar with the Chinese Communist Party’s tricks to hide from the sky, the photos and videos of Peng Shuai released by the Great Foreign Propaganda Department did not dispel people’s suspicions. Following the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations, the European Union also voiced the Peng Shuai incident, calling on the CCP to provide “independent and verifiable evidence” on Peng Shuai’s whereabouts and whether he is well. Nabila Massrali, a spokesperson for the EU diplomatic agency, told the media on November 24 that he had noticed the alleged statement and video of Peng Shuai, but reports of allegations of sexual assault and questions about Peng Shuai’s situation are still worrying. The EU calls for a “comprehensive and transparent investigation” of the allegations.
This EU statement hits the crux of the problem. If “independent and verifiable evidence” is not provided, all the information about Peng Shuai’an unilaterally released by the CCP, whether it is photos or videos, or anything else, can be said for sure that it is false and unreliable.
