The Tampa Bay Rays have made a strategic move to fill the gap left by the absence of Wander Franco, who is currently on administrative leave pending the resolution of his relationship with a minor. The team announced on Tuesday that they have signed Dominican infielder Amed Rosario to a one-year deal worth 1.5 million dollars.
Rosario is expected to compete with José Caballero for the shortstop position during spring training. In addition to his infield skills, Rosario can also play second base and the outfield, making him a versatile and valuable addition to the Rays’ roster.
During the 2023 season, Rosario posted a .263/.305/.378 batting line with 25 doubles, 8 triples, 6 home runs, 58 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cleveland Guardians. He was also reportedly courted by the Boston Red Sox in free agency.
Rosario was acquired by the Dodgers in a trade deadline deal in 2023, but saw his playing time decrease with the return of Miguel Rojas. Despite a strong start with the team, he was ultimately left off the roster for the Division Series.
The signing of Rosario reflects the Rays’ proactive approach to addressing their roster needs and ensuring they remain competitive in the upcoming season.
