The basketball men were very successful this year. They won the World Championships in Asia in September. In the final they won against the team from Serbia. Before that, they had already won against the basketball players from the USA. Winning the world championship title was a big surprise for Germany. The national team has never been so successful before. Many people in Germany watched the German team’s games on television. The sport of basketball has become very popular thanks to the World Cup victory.
Denise Herrmann-Wick was chosen as “Sportswoman of the Year”. She is a biathlete. Biathlon is a winter sport. The athletes do cross-country skiing. And they have guns with them. This means they have to shoot at targets every now and then. Denise Herrmann-Wick won one gold and two silver medals at the World Championships in the town of Oberhof.
“Athlete of the Year” is gymnast Lukas Dauser. He won the gold medal on the gymnastics parallel bars at the World Championships in the country of Holland. It was the first gold medal for the German gymnasts in 16 years. The “Sportsman of the Year” was chosen by many sports journalists.
