by admin

The world number one dreams of her first victory in the Championships, the German triumphed in 2018. Four precedents: two wins each

WTA number one, Australian Ashleigh Barty, is one step away from her first Wimbledon final. The tennis player born in ’96 will face Angelique Kerber, seeded number 25 on the scoreboard: the German has already reached the final at the Championships twice, in 2016 and 2018. On both occasions the opponent was Serena Williamns: a win on each side, with Kerber partying three years ago.

THE RESULTS

So far, Barty has only lost one set in this edition of Wimbledon and in the first round, against Spain’s Suarez Navarro. Then only “smooth” victories: eliminated Blinkova (6-4 6-3), Siniakova (6-3 7-5), Krejcikova (7-5 6-3) and Tomljanovic (6-1 6-3), Matteo Berrettini. Kerber instead won in two sets in the first round against Stojanovic (6-4 6-3), in the round of 16 against Cori Gauff (6-4 6-4) and in the quarterfinals against Muchova (6-2 6-3), while they are come the successes in three sets against Sorribes Tormo and Sasnovic in the second and third round of the Championships.

THE NUMBERS

The two players have faced each other four times in their careers, but Thursday’s will be the first challenge in a Grand Slam tournament. The balance is balanced, with two wins each: Kerber won in Brisbane in 2017 and in the Sydney final in 2018, while Barty won in 2017 in Zhuhai and in 2018 in Wuhan. Three out of four matches ended in two sets: only the first, in Brisbane, was taken to the third. Barty will have to contend with a left-handed player: the career balance is 24 wins and 8 defeats, which becomes 4-1 on grass (the one against Kerber will be the first match against a left-handed at Wimbledon). Prior to this tournament, Barty had only played two slam semifinals: at Roland Garros in 2019 (later victory of the tournament) and at the Australian Open 2020, defeat. Kerber is instead in the eighth semifinal of a Grand Slam tournament: four wins and three losses so far. The German is on the hunt for the fourth Grand Slam title after Australian Open 2016, US Open 2016 and Wimbledon 2018.
