Brilliant second half of the SGE: Eintracht turns European thriller against Augsburg

As of: April 19, 2024 11:45 p.m

Eintracht Frankfurt landed a hugely important 3-1 (0-1) win against direct rivals FC Augsburg in the fight for the European starting places. FCA took the lead on Friday evening (April 19, 2024). But in the second half, Eintracht turned the game around.

Ruben Vargas completed Augsburg’s ambush-like attack after a fine pass from Ermedin Demirović with a powerful shot from an acute angle under the crossbar (13th). Demirović increased his scoring record this season to a strong 25 points. After the break, Farès Chaïbi equalized for the hosts (55th), a little later Hugo Ekitike shot the hosts to victory with a fine individual effort (61st). Omar Marmoush “put the lid on it” in stoppage time against advanced Augsburg players (90. +5).

Toppmöller relieved after the game

Eintracht coach Dino Toppmöller was relieved at the Sportschau microphone after the game: “We lost a bit of order in the first half. And then at the break the clear announcement was: ‘Even more emotion, even more passion! And… Still remain calm in possession of the ball.’ And that’s exactly what we did and we’re super happy that we won the game.” “I thought the first half went well,” said Toppmöller’s Augsburg colleague Jess Thorup, “but then we were too passive. We didn’t manage to draw 2-2 and then we deserved to lose.”

Frankfurt’s changes appear to be effective

Toppmöller made five changes to his team after the 3-0 defeat in Stuttgart. The return of Ellyes Skhiri, Mario Götze and Éric Dina-Ebimbe, who were recently injured, brought a clearly visible change in the performance level of the Hessians. But Marmoush put the first good opportunity to score well next to the visitors’ goal.

However, visiting coach Jess Thorup’s team struck with their first, more dangerous attack. The goal clearly impressed Eintracht, whose actions seemed more and more haphazard. With the last action before the break, Marmoush missed the equalizer again.

Augsburg too passive

Once again Frankfurt came out of the locker room better after the break. And this time he was rewarded. After a one-two with Buta, Éric Dina-Ebimbe brought the ball from the baseline to the six-yard box, where Chaïbi just had to hold out his foot.

And Eintracht quickly followed up: Marmoush served Ekitike centrally, where the attacker got stuck first. As he followed up, Ekitike circled around the Augsburg defense and hit the ball at the bottom left – unstoppable for FCA keeper Finn Dahmen.

In stoppage time, Marmoush didn’t miss the last chance to score when FCA and its keeper Dahmen moved up at a corner and Frankfurt were able to clear the cross. Marmoush ran freely and alone towards the Augsburg goal and closed the often-quoted sack.

With the victory, the Hessians ended a series of four games without a win and consolidated sixth place against Augsburg.

Frankfurt in Munich, Augsburg against Bremen

Eintracht Frankfurt has to play in Munich on the next matchday (Saturday, April 27th, 3:30 p.m.), at the same time FC Augsburg hosts Werder Bremen.
