Cristiano Ronaldo is suspended for one game for obscene gesture

On February 28, 2024, Cristiano Ronaldo received a one-game suspension after apparently making an obscene gesture during a game against Al Shabab. The Disciplinary and Ethics Committee of the Saudi Football Federation handed down the suspension and also stated that Ronaldo could face a fine of 10,000 Saudi riyals (about $2,600).

Videos circulating on social media captured Ronaldo touching his ear before making a gesture in front of his pelvic area towards followers of Al Shabab. This action came after chants of “Messi” were heard during the match, referring to Ronaldo’s longtime rival, Lionel Messi.

This is not the first time Ronaldo has found himself in hot water for his behavior on the field. In April 2023, he appeared to touch his genitals while walking to the bench after a match against Al Hilal.

The committee’s decision is final and not subject to appeal. Ronaldo could also be required to pay an additional 20,000 riyals to cover the costs of the complaint made by the Al Shabab team. Fans and followers of the sport are left to ponder whether the star player’s actions were inappropriate and unprofessional or merely a moment of frustration in the heat of competition.
