On July 9, European local time, the 11th stop of the 2022 F1 Austrian Grand Prix ended the sprint race at the Red Bull Ring. Verstappen, who started from the first place, easily led the way and won the first place in the sprint again; Leclerc completed the lead after being overtaken by Sainz at the starting stage, and finally defeated his teammates and won the second place, and Sainz ranked third .
Following the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola in late April, the 2022 F1 Grand Prix is in contention for the second time in a sprint. Overall, the Red Bull Ring is a moderate downforce track, meaning the tires need to be exposed to moderate to high levels of stress due to traction and lateral force requirements. In this sprint, the drivers need to run 24 laps, with a total mileage of about 100 kilometers. The top eight drivers have corresponding points, of which the driver who wins the sprint will receive 8 points.
Verstappen and Leclerc occupied the front row. Perez, who was originally fourth in qualifying, was removed after the race because he exceeded the track limit at Turn 8 of the last flying lap of Q2. The lap results and all the lap times of Q3 made him only start from 13th, and Russell and the relevant drivers were all improved by one place. Walking across the track without permission was also given a warning on Friday.
The weather is still fine today, with a 0% chance of rain, a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius, a track temperature of 34 degrees, and a humidity of 34%. The warm-up laps before the race started unexpectedly. Alonso’s car was parked on the grid and pushed back into the pits, where Alonso was ultimately unable to compete in the sprint due to a malfunctioning electronics. After that, Zhou Guanyu’s car stopped on the track at the end of the warm-up lap, so that the race officer notified him to run another warm-up lap, and Zhou Guanyu started in the pit lane.
After the start of the race, Verstappen took the lead and Sainz surpassed Leclerc, but on the first lap Leclerc overtook his teammates and regained the second position. At the start, Gasly and Hamilton collided, Gasly dropped to 18th and Hamilton to 11th. On the 4th lap, Hamilton overtook Albon and rushed to 10th.
On the 7th lap, Ferrari launched an internal competition again, and Leclerc completed a tough defense against Sainz. At this point, Verstappen has established a lead of about 2.7 seconds. On the 8th lap, Hamilton surpassed Bottas and rushed to ninth. Albon was fined five seconds for forcing Norris to leave the track. After that, Perez surpassed Mick Schumacher and Magnussen to catch up to sixth.
On lap 11, Vettel collided with Albon at turn 6 and rushed into the buffer, but he could continue the race. After that, Hamilton was blocked by Haas for a while, but on lap 22 he passed Mick Schumacher and entered the points zone. In the end, after 23 laps, Verstappen took the lead in crossing the line to win the sprint championship, Leclerc and Sainz ranked second and third respectively. Russell, Perez, Ocon, Magnussen and Hamilton are ranked fourth to eighth with corresponding points. Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu finished 14th after starting from the pit lane. Zhou Guanyu will start from 13th on Sunday as teammate Bottas needs to be penalized to the end of the team.
After the race, the FIA launched an investigation into Mick Schumacher, Ricciardo, Russell, Ocon, Perez, Stroll and Vettel who had a phone call with the team during the formation lap. It was decided not to impose any penalties; however, Vettel expressed his dissatisfaction with the race at the driver’s meeting at 19:30 on Friday and was fined 25,000 euros for leaving the driver’s meeting without permission until the end of the season.
