A bitter blow for SC Freiburg: The Bundesliga club will have to do without key player Philipp Lienhart in the coming weeks.

The Austrian international Philipp Lienhart has to undergo groin surgery on Friday and will not be able to play in the Baden duel at the start of the second half of the season on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) with TSG Hoffenheim. Coach Christian Streich expects Lienhart to be out of action for six weeks.

It is still unclear whether Freiburg will become active on the transfer market as a result. “We have to talk through all scenarios. We have to see what is possible and who is even eligible,” said Streich on Thursday.

Caglar Söyüncü’s commitment is almost impossible

A commitment from ex-Freiburg player Caglar Söyüncü is almost impossible for Streich. “He would have to give up 4/5 of his salary or at least 3/4,” said the coach about the Turk, who apparently wants to leave Atletico Madrid. Apparently Borussia Dortmund is also interested in Söyüncü.

At the start of 2024, SC Freiburg drew 0-0 from Union Berlin. Despite numerous chances and a preponderance of play, Christian Streich’s team had to settle for one point. The Breisgau team is currently in seventh place, one point ahead of the eighth team from Kraichgau.
