Freiburg’s coach talks about his departure: Christian Streich leaves his future open after his contract ends

Cult coach Christian Streich currently has no concrete plans for the time after his departure from SC Freiburg.

“I have no idea, I don’t know. I don’t know what will happen to me in June,” said the 58-year-old: “What I notice is that these last two years in the European Cup were exceptionally great. But they were brutal intensive with the many, many games.”

“It now depends on how much time I need to regenerate and recover.” In his 29 years at the club he has always been “absolutely at the top level” and needs a break.

“I would be very surprised if I opened somewhere in July,” emphasized Streich: “Then I would have to find a special remedy that works quickly for regeneration. I don’t know if it’s on the market and if so, it probably is unaffordable or illegal. I can’t imagine it.”

Christian Streich: “It’s important that the team gets something new”

He has always had structure in his life through work. “Now I no longer have any work and therefore no structure,” explained Streich: “It’s about creating a new structure. I’ve never had that in my life.” He doesn’t want to rule out future jobs. Also simply because he hasn’t dealt with it yet. He has to see what he and his family need.

In any case, his decision to end his coaching job with the professional team after twelve and a half years remains “the right one, no matter what. It was about time,” said the Baden native: “The club needs new energy, that will happen. I’m really happy about it looks positive. It’s very important that the team gets something new.”

SC Freiburg has to do without Weißhaupt in Gladbach

Streich explained that he didn’t want to think too much about what had happened so far. “So that you are still fully focused to play good games.” Like on Saturday (3:30 p.m. in the live ticker and audio stream on sportschau.de) at Borussia Mönchengladbach, where Streich will have to do without the injured offensive player Noah Weißhaupt and probably also the ailing central defenders Matthias Ginter and Philipp Lienhart. It is the first of eight games in which he will be on the sidelines in front of the Freiburg bench.
