Gold to Jacobellis and Baumgartner, the ‘grandparents’ of snowboarding – Olympics

Yanqing, February 12, 2022 – Despite their age, snowboard veterans Lindsey Jacobellis e Nick Baumgartner, they gave gold to the United States in the mixed team cross race. Together Lindsey and Nick turn 76, with 9 Olympic participations overall. Despite this as a couple they were on their debut, but thanks to the experience the ‘grandfathers of America’ were able to win in the final, held in difficult snow conditions at the Genting Snow Park in Zhangjiakou, against the blue team formed by Omar Visintin e Michela Moioli.

The credit goes above all to Lindsey Jacobellis, 36 years old and already a gold around the neck in this edition, which taken behind for 4 hundredths of advantage, delivered by Visintin to Moioli, managed to catch the blue and overcome it: in the end she won, as she had done in the individual, when she had eliminated Moioli in the semifinal.

For Jacobellis it is also a ransom, after the mockery of the 2006 Turin silver. For Baumgartner, 40, instead it is the goal of a lifetime, crowned on the fifth attempt: “These tears are much better than those of the other day”, commented the stars and stripes athlete recalling the tenth place in the individual event. “I can’t say how much pressure it takes away when you know you have someone like Lindsey in the gate after you. When you don’t have to worry about things, you see your best come out. Age? We look younger than everyone.”
