After three years Thailand has decided to reopen Maya Bay, a tropical paradise on the island of Ko Phi Phi Leh made famous by the 2000 film with Leonardo DiCaprio, ‘The Beach’, based on the novel ‘The Beach’ (The Beach , 1996) by Alex Garland.
The authorities had decided to close it because it was stormed by tourists, not always respectful of the delicate ecosystem of the bay and the beach where the film was set. An astonished visitor came to compare it to Times Square in New York.
The destination will reopen on January 1st with rules. First of all, the number of visitors will be limited, from 10 to 16, 300 at a time, in 2018 it reached 5 thousand a day, and for a maximum of one hour. Boats will no longer be allowed to enter because they damage the coral reef. Areas where water sports can be practiced will also be identified.
