The attack on Daniel Nivel is one of the darkest chapters in German football history. At the 1998 World Cup, the French gendarme was crippled by hooligans in an alley. The victim accepted the invitation of both associations to Germany’s international match against France.
A good 25 years after the violent acts in Lens, another reunion is planned between the DFB leadership and the French gendarme Daniel Nivel, who was critically injured at the time, at the international football match in Lyon. Nivel and his family will be in the stadium on Saturday (9 p.m. / ZDF and in the WELT live ticker) at the invitation of the DFB and the French Football Association and will also meet DFB President Bernd Neuendorf, as the DFB announced on Thursday.
“It really moves me to see Daniel Nivel and his family again in Lyon. I am deeply impressed by how the family dealt with their fate and also that they accepted our help and our extended hand,” Neuendorf said in the association’s statement. The DFB also announced that the previous work in the Daniel Nivel Foundation will be continued in the DFB Egidius Braun Foundation. “The funds required for the foundation’s work are provided by the DFB and the required one-off contribution is made. As part of the foundation’s work, security-relevant projects relating to football events will continue to be implemented in the future,” said the DFB. France’s football association wants to participate in project content “individually and depending on the topic”.
