Longtime New York Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling has announced his retirement, effective immediately, the club confirmed on Monday. Sterling, who joined the Yankees broadcasts in 1989, has had an illustrious career calling 5,420 regular season games and 211 postseason games.
At 85 years old, Sterling had recently taken on a more low-profile role in recent seasons due to health issues. This season, he was known for working alongside Suzyn Waldman as part of the broadcast team. Sterling, known for his iconic home run calls and signature victory call, has been a beloved figure amongst Yankees fans for decades.
Sterling expressed gratitude and happiness as he reflected on his 36-year career broadcasting for the Yankees. He will be recognized in a pregame ceremony at Yankee Stadium on Saturday before visiting the radio booth during the Yankees’ game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Sterling’s last game behind the mic was the Yankees’ 8-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on April 7. His legacy will surely live on in the hearts of Yankees fans as he leaves an indelible mark on the team’s broadcast history.
