Extraordinary determination, dedication and indomitable strength of character in wanting to continue to fight even against the identity card (throwing the hammer at a competitive level usually stops at 36-37 years) are just some of the qualities of Marco Lingua, a 43-year-old hammerist from Mazzedio. , by profession a financier in Biella.

After obtaining his best result in hammer throwing since 2017, with the 75.56 meters reached on the fifth attempt (he had already exceeded 75 meters in previous attempts), on the occasion of the first national athletics meeting, held last Saturday, April 9, in Boissano, in the province of Savona, Lingua has targeted two other, much more prestigious, events. The first is the World Championships in Athletics, scheduled from Friday 15 July to Sunday 24 July in Eugene, Oregon, in the United States. The second is the European Championships scheduled from Thursday 11 to Sunday 21 August in Munich, events that Lingua will face at the age of 44, which will be celebrated on 4 June.

A dream, a goal to be able to participate in two such important events, in which it will be necessary to resist the pressure and temperamentally it will be very important to be strong, as Lingua himself states: “I am very lucky to be in shape, but also to practice this sport with great self-denial, seriousness and desire to improve day after day, always looking for goals to achieve. This is the only way to obtain results, but above all to go beyond the obstacles that the identity card puts in front of us every day ».

Lingua focuses on the training sessions, carried out inside his home in Mazzé, where he has set up a gym complete with a weight room: «Consistency and nutrition are two fundamental aspects in this sport – says Lingua -. I train six days a week, compatibly with my work, an hour and a half every day – explains Lingua -. In addition to the physical aspect, the mental aspect will also be very important, to face certain very difficult commitments, such as a European or a World Cup. These two aspects must go hand in hand “.

Lingua aims to try to improve the previous results both at the World Championships and at the European Championships: the tenth place obtained both at the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2006 and in Amsterdam in 2016, and at the World Championships in London in 2017, as Lingua continues: “It would be a dream to be able to improve these placings – comments Lingua – what comforts me most are the latest results: in addition to Boissano, in November 2021 at the Palaeventi in Tonengo di Mazzé in the deadlift, I managed to lift 340 kg, establishing the Italian record of the Wdfpf federation, the World powerlifting federation, while in February I obtained another Italian record in another federation, however, the Fipl in San Zenone al Lambro, in the province of Milan: in the 120 kg category, I lifted 333 kg “.
