Liverpool fails, AS Roma prevails against Milan

Liverpool FC were eliminated by Atalanta Bergamo in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. AS Roma defeated AC Milan and meets Leverkusen, Benfica Lisbon prevailed at Olympique Marseille.

The semi-finals of the Europa League are:

Benfica Lissabon – Atalanta Bergamo
AS Rom – Bayer Leverkusen

The games will be played on May 2nd and 9th. The final will take place in Dublin on May 22nd.

AS Roma clearly beat AC Milan overall

Rome quickly extended their 1-0 lead from the first leg. Gianluca Mancini scored after a shot from Lorenzo Pellegrini bounced off the post (12′). Paulo Dybala made it 2-0 with a shot (22′). Rome’s Zeki Celik was then shown a red card after a tackle from behind in midfield (31′).

Even when they were outnumbered, Roma held their own for a long time after the break and even had a chance to add another goal. Matteo Gabbia (85th) shortened the score for Milan shortly before the end. AS Roma are now opponents of Bayer Leverkusen.

After the 3-0 defeat in the first leg, Liverpool took an early lead at Atalanta Bergamo, Mohamed Salah converting a hand penalty (7th). Liverpool remained superior, but did not generate enough pressure to quickly follow up with further goals.

Benfica squanders its lead from the first leg in Marseille

Marseille defeated Benfica Lisbon led by German coach Roger Schmidt 4-2 on penalties; after extra time the score was 1-0 (1-0, 0-0). Olympique lost the first leg 1-2. Faris Moumbagna (79th) scored for Marseille in regular time, and Luis Henrique scored the decisive penalty in the thriller from the spot.
