On Monday he ended up in the local hospital after a fall in the final sprint of the UAE Tour opening stage. Today, however, 22-year-old Milan Fretin (Cofidis) from Genk appeared at the start of the 12 km long chrono test.

Fretin himself also thought that his adventure in the United Arab Emirates was over after the first stage. “It’s a pity that I have to leave the UAE Tour after just one day, but I’m happy that I’m coming away with only a dislocated shoulder,” the Genk resident posted on his social media on Monday evening. The message was accompanied by a photo of a badly scraped back.

In the meantime, however, Fretin had a good night’s sleep. The Genk native, who exchanged Team Flanders-Baloise for the French Cofidis in the mid-season, experienced little to no discomfort from his dislocated shoulder and so the rider decided – in consultation with his team doctor – to continue his journey in the UAE Tour. A good estimate, because a few hours later Fretin went into the history books as 81st of the 137 participants. Cofidis’ sprint ace allowed 1’16” on day winner Brandon McNulty. The American from UAE-Team Emirates immediately takes over the leader’s jersey from our compatriot Tim Merlier (Soudal-Quick Step).
