Palermo, June 12, 2022 – Il Palermo overtakes Padua for 1-0 to Barbera and comes promoted to Serie B. In the return final of the Serie C Playoffs, Matteo Brunori’s goal was decisive on a penalty kick after 24 minutes of play. In the first leg match Silvio Baldini’s rosanero won with the same result.
Horn and fireworks greeted the return of Palermo in B. The party started immediately at Renzo Barbera, with its 35,000 fans who filled the stadium always pushing their heroes. The uncontainable joy of the people of Palermo and like a wave it spread throughout the city with the center being attacked by cars and groups of fans.
Palermo is back in Serie B, three years after the exclusion from the professional championships took place in 2019 and the restart of Palermo Football Club from Serie D. In Serie C, Palermo, with Francesco Boscaglia on the bench then replaced by his second Giacomo Filippi, finished seventh in group C at the end of the regular season and after passing the first two rounds of the group stage closed their adventure in the first round of the national play-offs against Avellino: the 1-0 victory at Barbera was not enough because at Partenio they lost with the same result and the Irpini team went through the round due to the best position in the league.
The rest is recent history with the promotion in cadetry, arrived at the end of the play-offs, played in an excellent way, an unthinkable goal after a large part of the season played almost anonymously with decent results in home games and a fairly mediocre performance away from home. The first important turning point came in December when the club decided to change coaches exonerating Giacomo Filippi relying on the expert Silvio Baldini who had already led Palermo 18 years earlier in the year of promotion from Serie A to B after 32 years; but his adventure ended after the Christmas holidays due to some statements in which he did not hesitate to respond in a colorful way to the then patron Maurizio Zamparini.
