Honduran soccer is eagerly anticipating the appointment of a new coach for the national team. Rafa Villeda, the president of Olimpia and Fenafuth, recently addressed the sports press with updates on the progress of the selection process. He assured everyone that the decision would be made soon and that the intention was to commence work with the new coaching staff as early as possible.

Villeda mentioned that negotiations with potential candidates for the helm of the Honduran team were at an advanced stage. He specifically named Pedro Troglio and Reinaldo Rueda as individuals being considered for the prestigious position. Highlighting the importance of an efficient selection process, Villeda said, “There is a commission that was appointed within the Selection Commission for this purpose and later to present the options in a full meeting, which we hope can take place this weekend at the latest.”

To ensure transparency and thorough consideration of all options, Villeda, along with two other members, was chosen to identify and evaluate suitable candidates. He emphasized the importance of making the best decision collectively, saying, “The idea is to take them to the Selection Committee meeting to discuss together and make the best possible decision.”

When discussing the desired qualities of the next coach, Villeda revealed that they were mainly focusing on foreign coaches with experience at both the club and national team levels. He emphasized that experience, along with the ability to operate within the Federation’s budget, were vital factors in the decision-making process.

In response to concerns about potential conflicts of interest if Pedro Troglio, the current coach of Olimpia, were selected, Villeda dispelled any doubts, stating, “If that is the decision of the Selection Committee, Olimpia would have no problem with him passing. On Olimpia’s side, we are clear that through the success that the national team can have, it is a success for all Honduran soccer.”

Villeda also acknowledged the large number of applicants for the position, emphasizing that the Federation had carefully reviewed each resume to ensure the best possible decision was made.

Finally, Villeda addressed speculation about the return of Reinaldo Rueda, who led Honduras to the 2010 World Cup. He praised Rueda as a friend of Honduran soccer, stating, “He is a great person who deserves all our respect and if the opportunity to return presented itself, it would be welcome because he is very loved in our country.”

In conclusion, Villeda expressed his hopes for a collective effort in pushing towards Honduras’ participation in the 2026 World Cup. He emphasized the importance of unity among leaders, players, and journalists in order to achieve the common goal of successful qualification.

As the weekend approaches, soccer fans are waiting anxiously for the announcement of Honduras’ new coach. With many options under consideration, the football community hopes that the decision will set the country on the right path to realizing their World Cup dreams.
