German cycling hopeful Lennard Kämna was involved in a traffic accident during a training ride on Tenerife and is in hospital for further examinations. His German Bora Hansgrohe team announced this on Wednesday. It is not yet known whether the 27-year-old from Bremen was seriously injured.
According to a report in the “Bild” newspaper, the injuries are serious, but there is no danger to life. Team boss Ralph Denk said: “The crash was obviously not his fault. He collided with a car, according to my information it happened while turning.”
Further information will be available on Thursday, both on Kämna’s state of health and the course of the accident. Denk wanted to speak to the Spanish police first.
Kämna, who has already won stages in the three major tours Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta, is currently in training camp primarily preparing for his planned start in the Tour of Italy.
