Soccer Star Quincy Promes Sentenced to Six Years in Prison for Cocaine Trafficking
Dutch international attacker Quincy Promes, who currently plays for Spartak Moscow, has been sentenced to six years in prison by a court in his home country after being found guilty of cocaine trafficking.
Promes, who has previously played for teams such as Ajax and Sevilla, was not present in court to hear the sentence, according to a spokesperson. The extradition demands requested by Dutch justice to Russia were attended to.
The court determined that Promes, along with an accomplice, facilitated the shipment of 1,363 kilos of cocaine from Brazil to the Belgian port of Antwerp and then to the Netherlands in 2020. This decision was based on intercepted conversations and encrypted messages that Promes sent under the pseudonym ‘Fantasma’.
This is not the first legal issue for Promes, as he was previously sentenced to 18 months in prison for “attempted involuntary manslaughter” after stabbing a cousin during a family celebration in July 2020.
The case has caused shock in the soccer world, as Promes was highly regarded and had represented the Netherlands in 50 international matches. This news also brings to light the issue of athletes being involved in criminal activities and the potential abuse of their public status.
