Quarterback Brock Purdy was selected last in the NFL draft in 2022. Now he is breaking records and is only one win away from Super Bowl triumph with the San Francisco 49ers.

The NFL is a billion-dollar business, and the decision-makers invest a lot to get the right talent showcase. Every year around 260 talents are distributed among the 32 teams. The players are comprehensively illuminated. There are physical examinations, a cognitive test and sometimes strange questions in the interviews with the managers: Do you find your mother attractive? What would be your preferred murder weapon? Would you share your Google history with us?
But it is difficult to predict how young athletes will develop. And not every career is linear. There are first-round drafts that never make it into the league. And late selections that exceed all expectations. This was the case with the shining figure Tom Brady; The quarterback was selected in the sixth round, 199th overall, by the New England Patriots in 2000. And as a seven-time Super Bowl champion, he is the most successful playmaker in history.
Brock Purdy is nowhere near that far, even though he outclassed the now retired Brady 35-7 in his very first appearance as a regular player in December 2022. There is something breathtaking about his rise, as Purdy, 24, was the 262nd and final player selected in 2022. The “Mr. Irrelevant” of that draft, that is the label that has been slapped on it.
Over the past decade, 8.4 percent of quarterbacks selected in the final, seventh round even made it into the league. But Purdy didn’t become a water carrier and backbencher for the 49ers, but rather a regular player and star. Last year he benefited from numerous injuries in his position and played so well without any start-up time that he could no longer be pushed aside. On Monday night he can become the first seventh-round quarterback in history to win the Super Bowl.

Purdy’s antipode is Patrick Mahomes, he is something like the poster boy of the NFL. It’s a duel of extremes, only in monetary terms: Mahomes, 28, earns $59.4 million this season. And that’s a single game more than Purdy’s $870,000 in the entire season. Even his deputy at the 49ers, Sam Darnold, earns almost five times as much.
Nevertheless, no playoff team spends as little money on the quarterback position as San Francisco. This is only possible if you can field a playmaker who will play for the minimum wage of a rookie as stipulated in the collective bargaining agreement. Which means a huge advantage; the savings can be spent elsewhere. An NFL roster consists of 53 players and there is a universal salary cap of 224.8 million. It’s no surprise that San Francisco has the better quality, more balanced team.

What makes things even more difficult for the Chiefs is that, despite his bargain price, Purdy has had the better season so far than Mahomes: He has thrown more touchdowns and yards in a direct comparison. Even if it’s fair to say that the Chiefs’ dependence on their playmaker is significantly greater – the team doesn’t have too many players on offense who can make the difference. That’s the price of Mahomes’ millions. And also the success of the last few years with four Super Bowl participations since 2019. The more a team wins, the later it can draft, which is the key to parity in US sports.
So far, little has been able to unsettle Purdy, the metamorphosis of “Mr. He mastered the role of “Irrelevant” to the star who is under constant observation with astonishing aplomb. The question is whether Purdy’s nerves will hold up on the biggest stage possible, the Super Bowl, the largest one-day sporting event in the world. The celebration of gigantism and its long lead time can throw you off track.

The hype surrounding Purdy has been enormous in recent weeks; he has used the attention, among other things, to share his faith with the world. An Oregon pastor wrote that “Christian families should tune in to the TV on Purdy Sunday.” But also warned against the “often immoral half-time show that is not suitable for children”.
20 years ago, singer Janet Jackson’s nipple was visible there, and America’s conservative Christians have not recovered from that to this day. The NFL has been rocked by a number of scandals over the years. Players beat their wives, and in New Orleans coaches offered bounties to injure opponents on the field. But a nipple is the real outrage, of course.
Purdy prays before every game, and it is said that in college his teammates asked him to explore the nightlife with them to no avail; that doesn’t give him anything. He preferred to go fishing or to church. And also tried to improve his football skills.
Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers coach, says that Purdy’s most important qualities are his desire to learn and humility: “He has this basic confidence in himself, he is 1000 percent confident in his abilities. But he has no airs and graces and hasn’t changed, even though his life has changed radically. He doesn’t care about fame, he’s incredibly grounded. He knows what he wants and what person he wants to be. That’s damn rare, and not just in sports. He’s a special guy.” And veteran Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco’s most important offensive player alongside Purdy and wide receiver Deebo Samuel, says: “He is the leader of this team. Everything starts with him.”

“Beginning” is a good keyword: This amazing story, which began almost 22 months ago, could reach a temporary climax on Sunday – just as if it were a cheesy sports epic dreamed up by Hollywood: The Super Bowl The Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas had already hosted the draft in April 2022. Less than two years until the circle closes? This is football romance at jet speed. It would fit Purdy’s meteoric rise.
