Las Vegas Raiders Make Major Cuts on First Day of NFL Year

In a surprising move, the Las Vegas Raiders made significant cuts to their roster on the first day of operations for the new NFL year. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and former Pro Bowl slot receiver Hunter Renfrow were both released by the team on Wednesday.

The decision to cut Garoppolo and Renfrow was made under the new front office leadership of general manager Tom Telesco and head coach Antonio Pierce. The move is expected to save the Raiders more than $19 million in cap space.

Garoppolo, who signed a lucrative deal with the Raiders last March, was suspended by the NFL last month for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. As a result, the team has opted to release him rather than pay his guaranteed salary for the 2024 season.

Renfrow, who had a standout season in 2021, fell out of favor with the coaching staff after a critical fumble in overtime during the 2022 season. Despite his past success, Renfrow’s production declined in the last two seasons, leading to his release.

In addition to Garoppolo and Renfrow, the Raiders also announced the releases of quarterback Brian Hoyer and defensive lineman Jerry Tillery on Wednesday. The team is looking to make significant changes as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Fans took to social media to express their gratitude to Renfrow for his contributions to the team over the years. The receiver also thanked Raider Nation for the support during his time with the organization.

Overall, the Raiders’ roster moves signal a new direction for the team as they look to rebuild and strengthen their lineup for the upcoming season. It remains to be seen how these changes will impact the team’s performance on the field in the coming year.
