‘Safe Distance’ is a quietly developed thriller, building a hypnotic atmosphere rather than a roller coaster of twists: it is a difficult film to tell without spoilers, but we can say that on average it has been very well received by critics and that it might appeal to those who appreciate the genre cinema handled with an air of author (in this case the author, because the director is the award-winning Claudia Llosa). It is streaming on Netflix on Wednesday, October 13th.

‘Safety distance’, all about the film

The plot revolves around two young mothers who know each other when one of them visits the hometown of the other. An intense relationship arises between them which, says the official synopsis, “reveals an impending environmental disaster and a spiritual abyss”. Phrase that does not help to clarify what awaits us, but that puts into play the two great poles of the narrative.

‘Safe Distance’ is the adaptation of the homonymous novel written by Argentina Samanta Schweblin, who also wrote the screenplay, thus signing his first feature film. Next to her in the writing phase, and then behind the camera, we find the Peruvian Claudia llosa, which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival 2009 thanks to the dramatic ‘Il canto di Paloma’ (the story of a woman who “receives” the fear of life from her mother’s milk, intoxicated by violence and mistreatment by her mother during and immediately after pregnancy). In the cast of ‘Safety distance’ stand out Maria Valverde (‘Exodus Dei e re’), Dolores Fonzi (‘Paulina’), German Palacios (‘Celeste’), Guillermo Pfening (‘The German Doctor’) and Emilio Vodanovich (‘ La misma sangre ‘).

Reviews and how to watch the movie

There were some critics who weren’t fully satisfied, mostly due to a narrative they found a bit frayed, but the bulk of the reviewers spent words of praise, thus producing an average rating on Metacritic of 75/100. To justify the positive judgments above all the hypnotic charm of a story definitely out of the canons, but with its own logic and capable of captivating.
To watch ‘Safety distance’ you have to take into account that it lasts 1 hour and 33 minutes, that the vision is unsuitable for children and that Netflix publishes it on October 13 in its streaming content catalog.
