Saprissa’s Concacaf American Cup Journey Comes to an End in Philadelphia
In a thrilling match at Subaru Park, Saprissa fought hard but ultimately fell short against Philadelphia Union in the Concacaf American Cup. The Ticos, who had lost the first leg 3-2 at home, needed a win to advance to the next round but were unable to secure the victory they needed.
The game started off with Cuban Luis Paradela opening the scoring for Saprissa in the 13th minute, only to be quickly equalized by Philadelphia’s Julián Carranza. Quinn Sullivan then gave the home team the lead, but Warren Madrigal’s goal for Saprissa leveled the score once again. Mariano Torres later scored a crucial goal for Saprissa with a free kick, turning the series on its head at 5-5 on aggregate.
With the game tied and Philadelphia down to 10 men after Jack Elliott received a red card, Saprissa had a prime opportunity to capitalize and secure the win. However, it was Dane Mikael Uhre who ultimately sealed the victory for Philadelphia in overtime, ending Saprissa’s hopes of advancing in the tournament.
The final result saw Philadelphia Union and Saprissa draw 3-3 in the match, with Philadelphia advancing on a 6-5 aggregate score. Saprissa’s next rival in the Concacaf American Cup will be Pachuca of Mexico.
