Security reasons: Israel-Iceland European Championship playoff game moved to Budapest

As of: January 31, 2024 2:48 p.m

The playoff game for the chance to take part in the European Championship between Israel and Iceland will be played on March 21st in Budapest, Hungary – and not in Israel.

This was announced by the European Football Union. Due to the war in Gaza, it is currently not possible to host the event in the region for security reasons.

The winner of the game will play away against the winner of the game between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Ukraine on March 26th for a ticket to the European Championship finals in Germany. Should Ukraine win the playoff semifinals, the game would take place in Wroclaw, Poland. Games in Ukraine are also currently not possible due to the Russian invasion.
