VfL Wolfsburg celebrates its eleventh victory in the DFB Cup – including the tenth in a row. The Wolves under coach Tommy Stroot beat the champions from Bayern Munich 2-0 (2-0) in Cologne on Thursday afternoon (05/09/24). Jule Brand and Dominique Janssen scored the goals.
The VfL women already put a lot of pressure on in the early stages of the game. Jule Brand in particular provided a lot of offensive impulses. But Svenja Huth (7th) and Ewa Pajor (12th) did not yet finish successfully.
Brand strong and successful
But after less than a quarter of an hour, Brand sank the ball into the net – albeit with strong help from Bayern goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs. After winning the ball in midfield, Lena Oberdorf served Brand, who shot at the goal from about 21 meters to the left. The ball landed just in front of Grohs, who, however, missed the ball and then had to get it out of the goal behind her (14th).
The VfL women created further great opportunities against a surprisingly weak offensive team from Munich. But Oberdorf failed with a long-range shot past Bayern’s goalkeeper, who reacted splendidly this time (24th), who once again defused Oberdorf’s header after a corner (33rd). Oberdorf, who will play for Munich next season, injured her knee during the action, but was fortunately able to continue.
Janssen converts another corner
The team of master coach Alexander Straus found next to no approaches against the dominant team from Lower Saxony. VfL continued to put pressure on, Dominique Janssen headed in another corner to make it 2-0 (40′).
The Bayern women came out of the locker room with more commitment. But it took until the 58th minute for Lea Schüller to head a corner from her Munich teammate Klara Bühl and force Merle Frohms to make a brilliant save in the “Wolfinnen” box. Just a little later, Bühl took a defensive ball that was too short, and Frohms excelled again (64′).
Munich changes don’t work
Straus brought in fresh players in the final phase – but this broke Munich’s rhythm rather than allowing Linda Dallmann and Sydney Lohmann to create more scoring opportunities. Lohmann tried from a distance, but missed the Wolfsburg goal (80′).
The minutes passed, the VfL Wolfsburg players didn’t allow themselves to be disturbed and instead safely brought home their tenth cup win in a row.
Bühl: Wolfsburg was more toxic
“The disappointment is huge, we had imagined it differently,” said Klara Bühl after the game on ZDF, “many people felt the same way, getting into the game with zero. Wolfsburg did well tactically and we have to analyze that. Wolfsburg was more toxic in the duels.”
Wolfsburg’s Alexandra Popp lay on the ground at the final whistle: “That was pure relief. After losing the championship, we didn’t know what to expect. This is our victory, our title, our cup. Now Cologne is being torn apart.”
