As of: April 18, 2024 8:51 p.m

Iga Swiatek didn’t show any weakness at the WTA tournament in Stuttgart. Stuttgart’s Laura Siegemund only progressed in the doubles after losing the singles thriller.

Tennis star Iga Swiatek started the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart with a confident victory. The Polish world number one beat the Belgian Elise Mertens 6:3, 6:4 in the round of 16 on Thursday.

The three-time French Open winner started very focused and energetic, quickly took a 3-0 lead and secured the first set after almost 40 minutes. Swiatek missed the first three match points when the score was 5:4 in the second round, then after a total of just over an hour and a half of play she converted a forehand to decide the match. In the quarterfinals she will face Britain’s Emma Raducanu, who won 6-0, 7-5 against Linda Noskova from the Czech Republic.

Vondrousova and Rybakina in the quarterfinals

The two Wimbledon winners Marketa Vondrousova and Jelena Rybakina, however, made it to the quarterfinals. The Czech Vondrousova, who triumphed at the prestigious lawn event in England last year, beat Russian Anastasia Potapova 7:6 (7:5), 6:1 on Thursday. The Kazakh Rybakina, Wimbledon winner in 2022, had more trouble against the Russian Veronika Kudermetowa and ultimately won 7:6 (7:3), 1:6, 6:4 after around two and a half hours.

Marketa Vondrousova is in the quarterfinals at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2024 in Stuttgart.

Jasmine Paolini’s triumphant march continues

Jasmine Paolini was also able to show her strong form on clay on Thursday. The 28-year-old Italian defeated Tunisian Ons Jabeur in two close sets 7:6 and 6:4 and also reached the quarter-finals. There she meets Jelena Rybakina. For Paolini it was the fourth win against a top ten player this year.

Two semi-final games remain: Emma Raducanu and Linda Noskova and Qinwen Zheng and Marta Kostyuk will face each other in the final.

Siegemund in the double semi-finals

Laura Siegemund and her new partner Barbora Krejcikova have reached the semi-finals in the doubles competition of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. The Stuttgarter and the Czech, who are in second place in the doubles competition, won confidently in the quarter-finals on Thursday with 6:1, 6:3 against the Russians Lyudmila Samsonowa and Diana Schneider in just over an hour.

One day after losing her singles thriller, Laura Siegemund reached the semi-finals of the doubles competition at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

Siegemund is the only remaining German hopeful at the indoor event in Stuttgart. The doubles Nastasja Schunk/Ella Seidel clearly lost in the quarterfinals to the Russian Veronika Kudermetowa and Hao-Ching Chan from Taiwan 1:6, 2:6.

Siegemund was eliminated in the singles

In the singles, Siegemund lost her opening match against the Ukrainian Marta Kostjuk on Wednesday in three sets after a long fight. Angelique Kerber also failed in her comeback on German soil after her baby break due to Briton Emma Raducanu. Tatjana Maria had already lost to the Belgian Elise Mertens on Tuesday.
