On the evening of February 11, in the men’s 10,000-meter speed skating competition at the Beijing Winter Olympics, Sweden’s Nils van der Poel broke his own world record with a time of 12:30.74 and won the championship. He won the second gold medal at the Winter Olympics, and the result he skated in the competition became the first world record for the “Ice Ribbon” in the National Speed Skating Stadium, and the sixth Olympic record for this.

In the men’s 10,000-meter speed skating competition, Swedish star Niels van der Poel, who had previously won the men’s 5,000-meter speed skating gold medal and set an Olympic record, once again showed his super strength, with a score of 12:30.74. He won the championship and broke the world record (12:32.95) set by himself in February 2021 and the Olympic record (12:39.77) set by the Canadian star Bremen at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
Nils van der Poel, born in 1996, once participated in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and only finished 14th in the men’s 5000m. In the Beijing Winter Olympics cycle, especially after entering 2021, Nils Vanderpool has become the absolute king of the men’s long-distance speed skating event. In February and December 2021, he broke the men’s 10,000-meter and 5,000-meter world records successively, and became the favorite to win the above two events at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
On February 6, Niels van der Poel took the lead in the men’s 5000m race. He slipped out of 6:08.84 in the last group, beating Dutch star Patrick Rust in a thrilling way and winning the championship by breaking a record.
In the men’s 10,000-meter competition on February 11, 12 contestants were divided into two groups and skated 25 laps in the “Ice Ribbon” field. Niels van der Poel, who appeared in the final group, barely gave his opponent any chance. He crossed the finish line in 12:30.74, improving his own world record by 2.21.
After the game, Nils van der Poel raved about the “ice ribbon”, “It’s a really cool, great ice rink, and probably the best ice rink I’ve ever skated on in my life.” He also thanked the audience on the field.
Nils Vanderpool also revealed a small wish: “When we return to the Olympic Village, I look forward to having a cake to celebrate for me.”
