The International Olympic Committee Encourages Chinese Fans to Embrace Paris Olympics Mascot

In an effort to engage Chinese sports fans ahead of the upcoming Paris Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recommended the official mascot “Friget” to be favored by fans in China. The announcement was made on the IOC’s official website on April 29, with hopes that Chinese fans will embrace the unique design and symbolism of the Paris Olympic mascot.

“Official licensed products, including the mascot ‘Friget’, have been launched on the Tmall Olympic official flagship store during the 100-day countdown to the Paris Olympics,” the statement read. The design of “Friget” is inspired by the Phrygian hat, a symbol of French culture, showcasing the rich historical and cultural heritage of France while promoting unity and peace in the Olympic spirit.

Anne-Sophie Foma, head of television and marketing services at the International Olympic Committee, expressed excitement for Chinese sports fans to connect with the Olympic Games through licensed merchandise. “This is an exciting time for Chinese sports fans. Licensed merchandise closely connects sports fans to the Olympic Games and gives them the opportunity to own their own products. My own unique Olympic memory,” Foma said.

With the success of the mascot “Bingdundun” during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the IOC is hopeful that “Friget” will also capture the hearts of Chinese fans. Foma highlighted Tmall as a key platform for sports fans to access official merchandise and engage with the Olympic spirit. Tmall, being one of the largest online shopping malls in the world, is poised to provide Chinese fans with an unparalleled platform to support the Paris Olympics and show their love for the official mascot “Friget.”
