The Strange Case of Kanga Kaku

The Gabon attacking midfielder would not be 34, but 39 years old. His name would be Guélor Kiaku Kiaku Kiangana and he would have been born in Congo. CAF accuses him of falsification of birth documents

Who is Guelor Kaku Kanga? Officially he is an offensive midfielder (for Red Star and the Gabon national team) born September 1, 1990 in Oyem in the north of the African country. But in reality Kanga would have been born in Kinshasa and therefore would be a citizen of the Democratic Republic of Congo. And there are also strong doubts about the day, month and year of his coming into the world.

Born in 1990, but his mother died in 1986

According to an investigation launched by the Congolese football federation in 2021, the footballer’s actual date of birth would be 5 October 1985. In fact, the midfielder’s mother died in 1986. Then there is the name, which seems false like everything else. Kanga “the Congolese” would actually be called Guélor Kiaku Kiaku Kiangana.

The alleged falsification of birth documents

The case of the player, born four years after the death of his mother, has exploded again now a few days before the start of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (the tournament in Ivory Coast will begin on January 13). Kanga was called up by CAF (Confederation of African Football, ed.) to defend himself from the accusation of alleged falsification of birth documents.

The goal against Milan in February 2021

Kanga has been a Gabon international since 2012 and has already participated in the Africa Cup of Nations in three editions (the last one in 2021). He has been playing in Serbia with Red Star Belgrade since 2020 and has faced Milan in the Europa League in 2021 also scoring a goal from a penalty on 18 February (the final result was 2-2 and the Rossoneri qualified due to goals scored away from home).
