TURIN. A university campus with residences, study areas, laboratories and large green spaces for sport. This is the starting point for the relaunch of the area of the former Tecumseh factory, in Strada delle Cacce 99, in Mirafiori Sud.
The redevelopment project of the former lawnmower engine plant, abandoned for fifteen years, bears the signature of 34-year-old Roman architect Guido Maurizio Urbani. It was he, the other day, who won the international competition of ideas “Siat Young 2021: Mirafiori Next Step” for the reconversion of that area of 71 thousand square meters, an initiative of Siat (Society of engineers and architects in Turin ) and the Turin Chamber of Commerce, with the Community Foundation of Mirafiori Onlus, CNH Industrial and the Bertone Sant’Anna Immobiliare group.
An intervention plan that will now pass into the hands of the City offices, which will evaluate its feasibility. The city planning councilor, Paolo Mazzoleni, has already made contact with the promoters and will soon set up a meeting to present the project to the Municipality. The owner of the area – the Bertone group -, for its part, welcomed the intervention plan, so much so as to give the winners a special mention.
This is the first project for the revival of what is now an abandoned ruin, which has risen to the headlines over time due to its degraded conditions, so much so that it has more than once become a refuge for the desperate. It is planned, in detail, to build the area of 34 thousand square meters where the factory stands and leave the rest to green.
In particular, a student residence was designed, for a total of 120 beds, complete with a club and space for meeting rooms accompanied by co-housing in an area of 4500 square meters, plus residential structures for 17 thousand. square meters, services for 10 thousand square meters (a co-working, bars and shops, a supermarket) and a car park of 8 thousand square meters. Objective: “To implement the facilities of the district with a special focus on the younger generations”. as planned. All this, in one of the liveliest – and greenest – areas of Mirafiori, a stone’s throw from the Mausoleum of Bela Rosin and the Sangone park, bordering the Colonnetti park and the Inrim, the National Institute for metrological research.
The study plan of the architect Urbani was preferred by the jury to the projects of the teams of Wenjia Zhang (New York), Axel Cuellar (Helsinki), Yu Suzuki (Tokyo) and Gabriele Morello (Turin) as the “best proposal for redesign urban and landscape capable of distinguishing itself also for the innovative solutions in the field of green area design with attention to the aspects of climate control in urban areas ». It must be said: it would be accompanied by residential and commercial buildings, the construction of which has already been planned. The president of District 2, Luca Rolandi, hopes that the city will follow up on the project: “That of the former Tecumseh would become an area of Mirafiori of great value and in full revival.” –
