Germany’s chances of hosting the 2027 World Cup for women’s football have increased shortly before the award.
The competitors USA and Mexico withdrew their joint application and would like to host the world tournament in 2031 instead, as the US association announced on Monday (local time).
Germany is applying together with the Netherlands and Belgium, the only remaining competitor is Brazil. The decision will be made at the congress of the world association FIFA on May 17th in Bangkok, Thailand.
The decision from the USA and Mexico does not change the focus on the general assembly, the DFB announced on Tuesday evening. The organizing team has “worked intensively over the past two years on designing and planning the bid, which we believe will be the basis for a FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 of unique quality and impact.”
Possible venues have already been determined
The German side is scheduled to play in Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund, Düsseldorf and Cologne. Germany last hosted the Women’s World Cup in 2011. The last final round to date took place in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.
“I believe that we can offer a World Cup with excellent infrastructure and organization, with short distances to the venues and the prospect of a very good monetary profit, which will flow back into the global development of women’s football,” said DFB sports director Nia Künzer recently advertised in “Kicker”.
South Africa had already withdrawn its application before the USA and Mexico. The USA, which together with Mexico and Canada will host the next men’s World Cup in 2026 and the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, already hosted the women’s World Cup in 1999 and 2003.
