He returned to Venice with a showy prophet bum, hand in hand with his girlfriend Irene Forti. Mondocane is a tough film, set in the near future, in a Taranto divided in two. A rich and lively city, on the one hand. And on the other a ghost place. Alessandro Borghi is Testacalda, a bad teacher who recruits and manipulates soldier boys.

Borghi, his character is complex. A bad that bad is not all the way through.

“For me it was important that he was a three-dimensional character, with a violent dimension, but also with the nuances of a bona fide educator. A man who has a violent side, but who tries to improve the place where he lives.”

Will there be a sequel?

“This is a film that tells a universe, so it would also be a nice film to ‘serialize’. We’re not working on it yet. But it’s nice that the films leave the feeling of a story that goes beyond”.

He chose to work with a first-time director, on a film that was played largely by kids. Because?

“I once had the Hollywood myth. I wished an American director would knock on my door. Now I understand that Italian cinema is full of new, fresh energies, and that there is no longer any need to go outside to get visibility. international”.

Have you ever thought about going behind the camera, directing a film?

“Not for now. But there is one thing that interests me a lot: production. I would like to put together a team of good people, capable of creating well-made visual content. There are a thousand stories to tell through films, television series, theatrical performances. . On the other hand, I don’t think about directing, because I still really like being an actor. And I’m not one of those capable of doing both things together: I don’t understand how it is possible to be a director and an actor together “.
Mondocane speaks of Taranto, toxic factories, of the uncertainty of the new generations. It tells the future apocalypse but in the key of a black fairy tale.

“It is not a political film about Ilva di Taranto and it has no will to be, but if it had the possibility to shake consciences it would be wonderful. The other time, with Sulla mia pelle, we succeeded. Often we do not realize the power of cinema: I myself did not think that that film would shake reality, instead it helped to change things “.

At the same time Mondocane it’s a popular film, it is aimed at all audiences …

“Yes: it is a film for children and adults, a spectacular film and a film with a message. You can decide to see something that goes beyond this story, or simply enjoy a show. And if through this mechanism we manage to tease someone, would be very nice”.
Meanwhile, as if to confirm his phrases about Italian cinema that knows how to become international, Borghi will soon fly to Norway to interpret The Hanging Sun, a thriller noir by Francesco Carrozzini, an international project co-produced by Sky, Cattleya and Matteo Rovere’s Greenland.
